Dance on the volcano - Berlin in the roaring twenties
In the 1920s, Berlin was characterised by extreme contrasts in every respect: wealth and misery were often only a stone’s throw away from each other. Showiness, pomp and splendid architecture along the major boulevards and one street away: shabby backyards without sunlight. War invalids begging for alms in front of dazzling variety and light theatres. Furiously demonstrating communists and up-and-coming Nazis. Unconditional modernism, high culture with international appeal, a cocaine-inebriated avant-garde and a distinctive milieu…
Europe’s secret capital was a veritable powder keg – socially, politically and culturally. Energetic, fast and stretched to breaking point, shimmering and shabby, breathtakingly exciting and “highly explosive” in every respect.
20s.BERLIN will not only depict all this, but make it possible to experience it again. Virtually. As a photorealistic VR simulation – authentic, immersive and interactive!
It is only a stone’s throw from Pariser Platz to the world-famous boulevard “Unter den Linden”. One that is definitely worthwhile, because “real life” pulsates on the spacious pavements, in front of the luxurious private residences or on the terraces of the cafés on the corner of Friedrichstraße – and once again you’re right in!
So don’t be surprised if you suddenly see a cart drawn by ostriches with a lightly clad, dark-skinned beauty whizzing past you. It’s not an error – you didn’t look wrong! This is what actually happened and the lady in question is the legendary Josephine Baker. You’ll also be around when paperboy Tiger, whom you already know from Pariser Platz, meets enchanting Louise. This is anything but a “normal” encounter, because unlike loudmouth Anton, Louise comes from a good family. A broken but golden watch also plays a role… And it’s a tough one – just like the quests you can solve from this level on.

Vivid, virtual urban archaeology as an innovative tool especially for teachers
Of course, 20s.BERLIN is first and foremost a thrilling, entertaining experience – but the simulation is even more! It is also an innovative, didactic tool for teachers who want to bring learning content to their students in a contemporary way and therefore rely on gamification. How so?
Let’s start with one of the most obvious differences to other virtual time travel experiences: None of the buildings visualised for 20s.BERLIN is a mere look-alike! Every single one of them corresponds to the historically documented original. And that’s not all: Even details, such as “current headlines”, film posters and all scenes and events that go beyond pure everyday life are closely oriented to the documented history. They are also enriched with valid background information that can be accessed in a playful way.
If desired, teachers can also make use of documents for preparation, follow-up and in-depth study. In this respect, 20s.BERLIN also contributes to the development of a well-founded, yet vivid, virtual city archaeology.
